Kathy Dow and her daughter, Danica, have written and illustrated this book together as their first published project in hopes of stirring social consciousness in young children. Early in her life Danica learned that ‘words do hurt’ despite her mother’s admonishment that “sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.” Children see themselves in the cast of characters from the chubby girl to the shy guy as each one endures the hurtful words that undermine self-esteem. Help children search within themselves as to why one uses words to hurt.

“This book is definitely a conversation starter. A wonderful and useful tool when it comes to broach a highly sensitive subject. Dow discusses race in such a candid and accessible way that students’ young and old have no choice but to sit up and take notice. Low-Down Dirty Words should be a wonderful complement to character education programs in schools and homes across the country,”

- Jessica Luciano, educator.
